Ciandra’s Story

At the young age of 13, I developed Anorexia Nervosa, an eating disorder that has the highest mortality rate of all mental health illnesses. Having been bullied for being overweight throughout my entire childhood, I set out on a ‘healthy eating and exercise regime’ which soon spiralled into an all-consuming eating disorder.

The physical consequences of my eating disorder were terrible. My hair was falling out, I was cold all the time and all I could think about was numbers and food. Luckily for me, after starting day patient therapy and an inpatient stay, coupled with a few near-death experiences I had my turning point which changed my life. I recall recognising how ill I had become, with the awful effects of starvation on my physical and mental health. Thankfully I chose life and my long, arduous but transformative process of recovery began.

I have to point out that recovery is NOT an overnight process and there may be ups and downs along the road. The first step to my recovery was accepting help and that I was the only one who could do recovery for me. I needed to learn to accept myself and achieve a good relationship with my body image and food. This was an uncomfortable process, but reaching out to others who were also in the same process of eating disorder recovery made me feel I wasn’t so alone.

Sadly, there are so many others experiencing the same struggles as I went through, and by starting my mental awareness account on Instagram, I began sharing my story and supporting others in their recovery. This experience enabled me to discover my “voice” and passion to be a beacon of hope for health and happiness.”

And so, Flourish with Ciandra was born and my mission to coach, support and get people on the path to health and wellbeing started.

“My eating disorder took over, I lost my personality and all I cared about was my body, food, and how to get away with not eating my next meal.”
